Title: Ode to the Mume Blossom

Beside the broken bridge and outside the post hall
A flower is blooming forlorn.

Saddened by her solitude at nightfall,
By wind and rain she’s further torn.

Let other flowers their envy pour.
To spring she lays no claim.

Fallen in mud and ground to dust, she seems no more,
But her fragrance is still the same.

词是一种特殊的诗歌。它始于南朝(420-589)，在唐朝(618-907)得到进一步发展，并在宋朝(960-1279)达到顶峰。每个词都有调子。流行的旋律通常用于词。每个词都有一个标题。标题通常与内容有关。

Ci is a special kind of poem. It started in the Southern Dynasties (420-589), was further developed (发展) during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and reached its high point during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Every ci follows a tune (词牌). Popular melodies (旋律) were usually used for ci. Every ci also has a title. The title usually has something to do with the content (内容).

Many people have written poems and ci about the mume blossom (梅花). Lu You (1125-1210) wrote one of the most famous ci about the mume blossom. It shows the noble qualities (高尚的品质) of the flower – being proud, firm (坚定的) and low-key (低调的). These are also qualities that Lu had.

Lu lived during the Song Dynasty. At that time, the dynasty had an enemy (敌人) in northern China – the Jin Kingdom. As an official, Lu thought the dynasty should fight against the Jin Kingdom. However, the Song Dynasty lost the war. Lu lost his job and had to go back home. Lu saw himself in the mume blossom: even though it struggled (挣扎) through hard times, its spirit (精神) was still strong.
