Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to a speech given by British polar explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan at our school. He was the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles and make the great achievement of reaching the South Pole only on renewable energy.

最近，我有幸在学校校听了英国极地探险家、环保主义者罗伯特·斯旺（Robert Swan）的演讲。他是第一个徒步到达南北两极的人，并且用可再生资源完成了到达南极的壮举。

Swan’s stories of his trips really impressed me. It was more than 30 years ago. There were no communication tools – just endless sea and sky – and the nearest human being to him and his teammates was 2,500 kilometers away. For the next six months, they had to face all the problems by themselves. He also told us a funny thing: When taking a shower during the trip, you have to get naked in the tent, and rush as fast as possible in the temperature of minus 30 C to the shower and then run back to the tent.

In 2017, Swan set foot on the South Pole again, this time with his son. The trip was a great feat not only because Swan was already 61 years old, well past the average age of 35 for an explorer, but also because it was the world’s first trip to Antarctica to be made only using renewable resources. And now Swan is still working hard in environmental protection.

2017年，斯旺再次踏上南极，与往常不同的是——这次是与他的儿子一起。这次旅行是一项伟大的壮举，不仅因为斯旺当时已经61岁，远远超过了探险家平均年龄35岁，而且因为这是世界首次仅使用可再生资源的南极之旅。现在，斯旺仍然在环保领域努力工作。

Also, he talked about the importance of saving energy and protecting our planet. He reminded us that the fate of our planet rests in our hands, and he wants us to believe that we young people can make a difference.

After his talk, I was filled with a renewed sense of purpose and optimism. Each of us has the power to create a brighter future for our planet.
